Knowledge Capital and Hospitals
Some of the most important assets of New York area non-profit hospitals never appear on a consolidated balance sheet. They are the intangible, non-financial, or what are typically called knowledge capital assets: human capital (e.g., medical and admin staff); structural (information systems, decision processes); and relational capital (brand equity, strategic alliances).
I have researched the extent to which knowledge capital is used to support board strategic planning and decision making. I conducted half-hour confidential interviews with NY-area trustees, and the content analysis of these interviews has allowed me to construct case studies. The insights provided by my research will be enormously helpful to those involved in governance studies and operations.
